Biography

Michael D. DeMichele, Ph.D. is Professor of History and International Studies Program Advisor in the Department of History at The University of Scranton. He received his B.S. in History at The University of Scranton and his M.A. and Ph.D. in History from the Pennsylvania State University.     During his career, Dr. DeMichele has received numerous teaching awards including the Alpha Sigma Nu Award for Teaching Excellence, the University President’s Award for Outstanding Teaching, the Sears, Roebuck National Award for Outstanding Teaching and Campus Leadership, the Dexter Hanley College Teaching Award, the first CASE Professor of the Year Award in 1985 and was chosen by the Class of 2004 as the University Professor of the Year. He has also received an award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology at the International Conference of Teaching and Technology He is the first recipient of the Campion Award given to an administrative, faculty or staff member who contributed to the University’s purpose as a Catholic and Jesuit Institution.  Most recently he has received the Provost’s Award for Outstanding Service and Leadership at The University of Scranton. He is listed in Who’s Who in America, the Journal of American Scholars, Who’s Who in Education, and the Dictionary of International Biography. He has had historical articles appear in: Social Studies, the American Benedictine Review andPennsylvania History along with the publication of his book The Italian Experience in America: A Pictorial History. He has also given numerous presentations and papers on various historical topics throughout the United States and abroad. He is a member of several historical organizations including the World Historical Association, the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilization and the Lackawanna Historical Association.     During his long career at the University, Dr. DeMichele has taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate history courses ranging from the Constitutional and Legal History of England to the History of Contemporary World Politics. For each of the past eighteen years he and several of his colleagues have taken groups of students to London on study tours.
