Biography
Dr Brian Tester is Principal Research Fellow within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton. rian Tester has spent most of his career working in industry on aircraft engine noise research, principally at Rolls-Royce in Derby, which makes aircraft engines that for example power the Boeing Dreamliner 787 and the Airbus A380. He also spent six years at the Lockheed-Georgia Research Laboratories working on jet noise research. Brian is now a Principal Research Fellow in the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research and is a member of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Gas Turbine Noise. He participates in research programmes on jet noise, turbomachinery noise, duct acoustics and advanced measurement techniques.
Research Interest
Dr Tester is interested in the way sound is generated by the fan and combustor in aircraft engines and how the sound propagates through the engine and radiates to the far-field i.e. to the communities around airports. This knowledge helps to design improved noise reduction features such as acoustic linings within the engine ducting. His theoretical and experimental acoustics research includes the application of advanced measurement techniques to engines and to small-scale fan models and he likes to see the results of these being applied in industry, such as Rolls-Royce, Boeing and Airbus.
