Biography
Dr Kevin James Cross is Visitor within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton. Completing his MEng in Electrical Engineering in 1992, Kevin immediately began a PhD in three-dimensional surface metrology investigating the measurement of nominally spherical objects (contact lens) using a state-of-the-art stylus profiler. He then began a 15 year industrial career, working as a software engineer primarily in marine engineering with a focus on instrumentation systems for operational/performance monitoring of large vessels, ship and AUV simulators and auto-pilots. In 2006, he returned to his metrology roots, developing instrumentation systems for a University spin-out company. Projects included optical surface profilers for the assessment of paint erosion and dental samples, and a high-speed imaging system for visualising arc discharges in large circuit breakers.
Research Interest
Development of algorithms for the assessment of complex structured surfaces. Enhancement of X-Ray CT as a tool for precision dimensional metrology.
