Biography
Thomas William Smith is a Senior Research Assistant in Biomethanisation at the University of Southampton Thomas graduated from the University of Sheffield with a MChem degree in Chemistry in 2013 before undertaking a PhD at the same institution. His PhD research focused on the development and application of novel spectroscopic tools for online headspace analysis of gases generated and consumed by pure microbial cultures and the behaviour of stable gaseous donor molecules with applications in medicine, particularly carbon monoxide releasing molecules (CORMs). Thomas joined the University of Southampton in 2017 as a Senior Research Assistant and is currently working on the optimisation and analysis of both in situ and ex situ biomethanisation as part of the IB Catalyst project “Biomethanisation of CO2 in Anaerobic Digestion Plants”.
Research Interest
Thomas’s current research interests lie in gas analysis, particularly in relation to biohydrogen and biomethane production. His previous research has involved the use of online Raman spectroscopy to monitor H2 metabolism of pure cultures, the use of online infrared spectroscopy to monitor anaerobic nitric oxide metabolism in Escherichia coli and the development of in situ stable isotopic labelling methods to probe biochemical pathways relevant to gas metabolism.
