Alan Marshall

Biography

I joined the University of St Andrews as a lecturer in Human Geography in August 2015. I previously worked as a lecturer in Social Statistics at the Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research at the University of Manchester where I continue to hold an honorary research fellowship. I completed my PhD in Social Statistics in 2009.

Research Interest

My substantive research is concerned with understanding and describing social and spatial inequalities in health. My research explores how social, biological and contextual factors (from national to neighbourhood) interact to influence health across the life course and particularly in later life. Methodologically, I am involved in the development of quantitative techniques to derive small area estimates and projections of population and population characteristics (such as disability and ill health) which I have shared with local planners through the POPGROUP population projection software. More generally, I am interested in debates around population ageing and associated policy responses.
