Biography
My first monograph was a study of the œuvre of Annie Ernaux (Annie Ernaux, une poétique de la transgression, 2009), and I keep giving talks and publishing articles on this writer on a regular basis. Other, broader interests encompass: journalistic writing and intellectual life in France; the rise of consumerism and its representation in artistic forms; the place of women and their writings in contemporary France. As part of my on-going interest in autobiography and the writing process, I have set up the module 'Creative Writing in French' (FR4150). I also offer modules entitled ‘Writing the Self in 20th and 21st-century French Literature’ (FR3078) and ‘Good and Ads: Consumerism in Modern France’ (FR4182) and am actively involved in the School's Comparative Literature programme.
Research Interest
My research interests lie in the field of contemporary French literature and culture, with particular emphasis on the theory and practice of autobiography and autofiction, and on innovative ways to ‘inscribe the self’, through literature or thanks to more recent modes of communication. My current book-length project, entitled Projections de soi: écrans de l’imaginaire et constructions médiatiques de l’autofiction, encompasses a varied corpus of authors using televised and cinematic screens as part of projects of self-representation which establish dialogues between literature and the moving image.
