Katie Muth

Biography

Katie received her doctorate in postwar American literature from Washington University in St. Louis in 2010. She received her bachelor’s degree with highest distinction from the University of Nebraska in English and philosophy, with honors in creative writing, in 2003. Before coming to Scotland in the fall of 2012, she taught at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, and at Washington University.

Research Interest

Katie is completing her first book manuscript, The Millennial Imagination: American Literature,1989–2009, which outlines the contours of American fiction on the cusp of the twenty-first century, at a time when (post)modernism and its corollaries had been exhausted and yet remained inescapably proximate. Focusing on five authors whose careers and aesthetic commitments bridge the divide between canonically postmodern writing and the emergent forms and themes of contemporary American fiction, The Millennial Imagination helps us to understand and to contextualise the development of some of the most pressing concerns for the literary arts today. Katie’s second project ‘Cold War Computing and the American Novel’ will analyse how American fiction after World War II helped invent the concept of a digital age.
