Biography
Tobias is the director and founder of the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good, Scotland's first research centre dedicated to the growing field of philanthropy studies, and is the School of Management's Director of Impact. He is co-editor of the international handbook on philanthropy, The Routledge Companion to Philanthropy. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Public Scrutiny (CfPS) in Westminster and an elected representative on the University of St Andrews' Academic Council. Prior to joining the School of Management in January 2014, Tobias was Principal Research Fellow at Cass Business School City University London, where he worked with the Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy (CGAP) and the Centre for Charity Effectiveness (CCE). He is a former Governor and Member of the Boards of Trustees of the St Katharine and Shadwell Trust and of London's EastEnd Community Foundation. Between 2009 and 2015 he also served on the Board of the International Research Society for Public Management (IRSPM). Interested in engaged scholarship and in bridging academia, practice and policy, Tobias is currently leading on a long-term collaborative project aimed at building and developing the field of theory and practice in philanthropy, funded through a The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund Legacy Grant. He is a co-investigator on a three-year comparative study of community foundations in Canada and the United Kingdom, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and he has been in charge of the UK-wide seminar series 'Philanthropy to the rescue? Exploring the opportunities, strengths and challenges of philanthropy' funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
