Professor chris Proudman

Biography

Chris Proudman graduated from Cambridge University Vet School in 1988 and was awarded a PhD in Equine Epidemiology from University of Liverpool in 1996. His academic career has embraced teaching equine medicine and surgery, equine intestinal disease research and various leadership roles at the University of Liverpool.

Research Interest

Chris's overarching research interest has been equine intestinal health. He was the principle investigator on a nine-year post-operative survival study of horses undergoing intestinal surgery and has published widely on different types of equine intestinal disease, including intestinal parasitism and equine grass sickness (dysautonomia). His current research focus is understanding the intestinal microbiome of the horse in health and disease. Metabolomic and metagenomic approaches are being used to establish the profile and variability of the healthy gut microbial communities and to characterise the equine metabonome. Benchmarking the healthy gut microbiome and metabonome will provide essential platforms for the exploration of equine intestinal health and disease.
