Biography
Carl Mallett is a 4th year part-time Doctoral Researcher in the Department of Sociology. Originally from Coventry, I returned to my home city to complete an M.A in Social Research at Warwick in 2010.Research focuses on the ways that people of differing backgrounds negotiate and possibly overcome 'difference'. Furthermore, it is also interested in exploring the intersection of structure and agency in the everyday lives of individuals. The ethnography is contextualised within the field of martial arts, specifically Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and draws upon Bourdieu's (1977) concept of 'habitus' and Anderson's (2011) 'cosmopolitan canopy'.
