Biography

Dr. Florian Reiche joined the University of Warwick in September 2014. He is a Teaching Fellow for Quantitative Methods at the Department of Politics and International Studies, the Department of Sociology, and at the Warwick Q-Step Centre. He is also the Course Director for the BA in Politics and Sociology and the Deputy Director for Student Experience and Progression. He attained the status of Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in spring 2016. Florian was educated in both Germany and the United Kingdom. He received a Diploma in Economics and Social Sciences at the Leuphana University Lueneburg, Germany, and completed his Ph.D. in Politics at the University of Sheffield in 2014. His thesis was entitled "Confounding Modernisation: Development and Democracy in sub-Saharan Africa".

Research Interest

Florian's PhD thesis was concerned with the relationship between economic development and democratisation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). His current research focuses on the implications of missing data in large N studies of political modernisation. He is also interested in the role of neopatrimonialism in the democratisation of SSA, and the problems associated with the operationalisation and measurement of this concept in quantitative analysis. Future research interests also involve the role of post-materialist values in democratic transitions in SSA.
