Nicholas Smith

Biography

Nick is an associate head of department in Geography and Environmental Management and leads the UWE Bristol Planning School. His research and teaching interests centre on strategic planning and the delivery of infrastructure and major projects. With respect to infrastructure, he closely follows the planning of nationally significant infrastructure, such as high speed rail and on and off-shore wind, and the delivery of local and sub-regional infrastructure. Within this element he is particularly interested in the enhancement and protection of green and blue infrastructures. He is also interested in the plan-making process and how discussions and practices concerning his principal interests extend internationally. In his role as a UWE teaching and learning fellow, Nick is also seeking to develop new research streams around his teaching and pedagogic experiences. Nick has co-authored a study skills book for town and country planning students with Adam Sheppard, a colleague within the same department at UWE. He has also helped to edit an international book on green infrastructure for Edward Elgar. He is a chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and is active at a both a national and regional level. In 2013 Nick acted as regional chair. He is also a member of the Town and Country Planning and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He is passionate about geography and planning and is involved in a series of environmental education initiatives. Nick is a Future Planners' ambassador and is involved in a series of outreach activities. He is also part of a steering group that will develop a new degree apprenticeship in town planning. Nick is committed to delivering a positive student experience and has been rewarded for his efforts during his time at the university.
