Biography

Following B.Sc (Mathematics, 1964)) degree at Imperial College, London appointed to Assistant Lectureship in the Department of Statistics, University of Aberdeen (1965), completing Ph.D. (London, Deterministic Models in Genetics, 1968). Visiting positions Stanford University (1971), U of Houston (1974), Univerity of Utah (1978) Tenured posts held; Research Fellow, Institute of Genetics, University of Pavia (1968-1971), and has since been at the University of Sheffield, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader, Professor in School of Mathematics and Statistics (1971-1998), Professor of Genetic and Informatics, School of Medicine and Biosciences (1998-2008), Emeritus Professor (School of Mathematics and Statistics (2008-).Formerly a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Myriad Genetics, and currently International Expert for INSERM, a member of the EPRSC Peer Review Panel and of the MRC Panel of Experts. He is Editor in Chief of Applied Mathematics, and is a joint editor (with David Balding and Martin Bishop) of the Handbook of Statistical Genetics (Wiley, Chichester) currently in its third edition.

Research Interest

Research interests include deterministic and stochastic modelling in evolutionary biology, population, molecular and human genetics. Current research projects lie within the areas of evolutionary games, theory of random graphs, combinatorics and stochastic processes.
