Biography
MA Vet MB, MRCVS, a Glasgow University graduate, joined St David's from Aviagen in September 2008. After graduating Barry worked in general practice and then spent a year at Glasgow Veterinary School. He completed a PhD at Edinburgh Vet School focusing on bone development in poultry and then spent four years as a lecturer at the veterinary school in Melbourne, Australia. Whilst in Australia he completed an avian pathology course and was also funded by the Australian poultry industry to investigate bone disorders. On his return to Scotland he headed a research group at the Roslin Institute investigating lameness and bone disorders in poultry for seven years. He has extensive global experience of broiler breeder, broiler management and disease control.
Research Interest
His experience with Aviagen ranged from being a company veterinarian to a director. Whilst at Aviagen he had extensive practical and management responsibilities, from assisting customers throughout the world including the Middle East and Europe on health issues; biosecurity and disease control planning, to setting up and contributing to research projects on poultry diseases such as dysbacteriosis, pododermatitis, broiler lameness and clubbed down. Barry heads up the Scottish branch 'St David's Poultry Team at the Dick Vet'.
