Paul Miller

Biography

Paul Miller is a trained agricultural engineer who has been involved with research and development relating to agricultural machinery since graduating in the early 1970’s.  In the mid-1980’s he became Head of The Chemical Application Group at what was to become Silsoe Research Institute – a post that gave him considerable firsthand experience in all aspects of crop spraying and fertiliser application and that led to him receiving prestigious awards for his work on spray drift and the targeted application of herbicides.  He has been a Research Fellow with the Home-Grown Cereals Authority with work on precision farming technologies and has been a Visiting Professor at Cranfield University. When the closure of Silsoe Research Institute had been announced, Paul Miller joined The Arable Group in 2005 to set up Silsoe Spray Applications Unit that is now part of NIAB TAG.  This move again provided him with the opportunity to get directly involved with research and consultancy relating to crop spraying and sprayers particularly in relation to nozzle selection, application volumes, buffer zones and the targeted application of herbicides.  In the past two years Paul has worked part-time for NIAB TAG as a Specialist Adviser while also taking on the roll as Secretary to The Douglas Bomford Trust – a charity that supports activities relating to agricultural engineering.

Research Interest

Paul Miller has served on many national and international committees concerned with agricultural chemical application and has an international reputation for work in this area.  He has published more than 140 papers and articles, written 5 book chapters and has been involved in project work in many countries of the world including Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, USA and in Europe.
