Biography

Red Grin turned his early work as an oileld roughneck and commercial power salesman (plus studies at the University of Texas and the University of Houston leading to a marketing degree) into a career in entrepreneurship. He started as an independent broker of barges and towboats, and then formed Coastal Towing as president and chairman of the board. Mr. Grin grew Coastal from six tank barges and three towboats to 136 tank barges and 36 towboats. When he sold the company in 2001, Coastal Towing was the largest transporter by barge of heavy liquid fuel oil on the inland waterways of the United States. In 2001, Mr. Grin formed Grifco Transportation, Ltd. He built the company in less than eight years to 20 tank barges and 10 towboats. He sold Grifco in 2008 for $125 million to Genesis Energy Partners, a NYSE-traded company. Meanwhile, he served on the boards of directors of two banks. He is a lifetime vice president and director of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where he continues to be active. Additionally, he has served, and continues to serve, on the boards of several local charities.
