Biography
Dr. Gruenthal is Chair of the Department of Neurology and Director of the Neurosciences Institute. He is a nationally renowned expert in treating the most complex cases of epilepsy. He utilizes a systematic approach to diagnosis that entails a detailed review of a patient’s medical history prior to performing comprehensive tests and evaluations. He and his colleagues provide a breadth and depth of epilepsy training and experience that is unmatched in the Capital Region, including the most advanced technology housed in Albany Med’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. Dr. Gruenthal’s approach to patient care is thorough and participatory. He discusses every treatment option with patients and assists them in the decision-making process. “My goal is to help people become seizure free and enjoy a better quality of life,” explains Dr. Gruenthal. He and his colleagues use a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and management of epilepsy. People who may be candidates for surgical treatment are discussed by a team of experts at weekly multidisciplinary conferences. Dr. Gruenthal conducts research on various aspects of epilepsy including causes, consequences and treatment options. He participates in regional and national initiatives to teach the latest principles of diagnosis and treatment to other neurologists.
