Biography

Dr. Betsy Thompson and her husband, Dr. David Thompson founded Animal Hospital of North Asheville in 1977. Dr. Thompson greatly enjoys her job as the hospital administrator. Dr. Thompson's love of veterinary medicine stems from her childhood. As a young girl, she was heartbroken when her beloved Chihuahua, Abby, died at a young age from a condition that could not be diagnosed. As she watched the way Abby was treated at one veterinary hospital, Dr. Thompson wanted to become a veterinarian so that she could be more gentle and understanding with pets and their people, and so that she could always make available the best diagnostic technology and procedures. She deeply loves animals and strives to provide compassionate veterinary care to all pets. She most enjoys getting to know each pet that comes into the hospital and loves learning new things about veterinary medicine. A native of South Carolina, Dr. Thompson attended the University of South Carolina as an undergraduate and received her Bachelor's Degree, Magna Cum Laude, in Biology in 1971 and was named a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She continued her veterinary education at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine where she was awarded her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine, Magna Cum Laude, in 1975. Dr. Thompson has been and continues to be active with Asheville Humane Society.  She has served as secretary and vice chairman of the board and as a member of the steering committee for the capital campaign to build the Asheville Humane Society's Adoption and Education Center. Dr. Thompson wholeheartedly believes in the mission of the Asheville Humane Society and is proud to devote her time and talents to the organization. Dr. Thompson is a member of the American Animal Hospital Association, American Veterinary Medical Society, North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, and Veterinary Information Network. Dr. Thompson’s two three legged dogs, Ellie and Lulu, come to work with her almost every day.  Crazy, fun-loving Ellie, a darling yorkie mix, was adopted as a rescue and loves hanging out in “mom’s” office. Lulu, a sweet hound mix, came into AHNA badly injured and was adopted by the Thompsons after the three months of hospitalization that were necessary for her partial recovery. Both dogs absolutely love coming to work and love visiting with the staff whenever they can. Dr. Thompson leaves her sweet Roy, a dachshund mix, at home because he is totally blind and copes better in the familiarity of home. Since the special needs pets require more care, the Thompsons have a lower number of pets than usual, but cannot live without at least one cat. The lucky boy is Eddie, a darling gray and white cat, who they found in a dumpster as a behind a restaurant while on a trip years ago. Needless to say, all four pets are treasured and showered with love.  There are also three well cared for horses in her extended family, Poco, Henry, and Profiada. In her spare time, Dr. Thompson enjoys the outdoors and hiking with her husband and her dogs, gardening and swimming. Most of all she loves spending time with her three adult children, Beth, Richard, and Kate, and her pets. She and Dr. Dave Thompson also have several grand-pets that they adore, as well, and enjoy being with whenever they can.
