Biography
The co-owner of the Animal Hospital of North Asheville with his wife, Dr. Betsy Thompson, Dr. David Thompson has cared for pets here since he opened the hospital in 1977. Dr. Thompson is a general practitioner with a special focus on veterinary dentistry. Dr. Thompson believes it is a privilege to serve the people and adorable pets who come into the hospital each day. As a child, he and his dog, Flipper, were inseparable and could often be found hiking together in the woods. When he was in the sixth grade, Flipper died in an accident, and Dr. Thompson committed himself to becoming a veterinarian - a decision that he has never regretted. As an undergraduate at Clemson University, Dr. Thompson received his Bachelor's Degree in Poultry Science in 1971. He next attended the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine and was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1975. An active member of the Asheville community, Dr. Thompson is on the advisory board of the Buncombe County Animal Shelter and serves as a member of the Asheville Humane Society Steering Committee. He has received the U.S. Army's Accommodation Medal. Dr. Thompson is the recipient of two beautification awards from the Men's Garden Club and Quality Forward. He is a member of the American Animal Hospital Association, American Veterinary Medical Society, North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Feline Practitioners, American Veterinary Dental Society, and Veterinary Information Network. He and his wife are the proud parents of three adult children, Beth, Richard, and Kate. When he's not busy with his many duties at the hospital, Dr. Thompson can be found outside hiking and gardening, looking for antiques in local stores or woodworking. His pets provide him with much joy and companionship. His animal companions include two dogs, Bob and Roy; two cats, Norman and Eddie, and three horses, Poco, Porfiada, and Henry.
