Biography

Steve Purves joins MIHS after working seven years as the President/CEO of Munroe Regional Health System, Inc., a public, not-for-profit healthcare system that serves Marion County and North Central Florida. Overseeing 2,500 employees, 1,700 volunteers and annual net revenues of over $372 million, the healthcare system includes Munroe Regional Medical Center a 421-bed tertiary acute care hospital (recognized year after year as one of the nation’s top 50 hospitals), a wholly owned Clinical Integration Organization, Florida’s first Free Standing Emergency Center, a Speech and Hearing Center, three Wellness & Rehabilitation Centers and various clinical joint ventures, including a long term acute care hospital, a 180-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility and a regional home healthcare service.Purves spearheaded the regions first Clinical Integration Organization (Physician Health Partners) which includes over 200 physicians working together to improve quality and reduce costs across the continuum of patient care. He also opened the region’s first Pediatric Emergency Center and led the construction of both a Wound Care Center and Munroe at the Oaks, a secondary market facility with access to all of Munroe’s primary service lines. In addition to establishing the region’s first cardiac electrophysiology program, he re-organized and re-branded Munroe’s nationally recognized cardiovascular program, Munroe Heart, while launching new brands such as Munroe Orthopedics and Munroe Surgery. During his tenure Munroe’s service lines earned an average of 40 national awards ayear, including the National Research Corporation consistently naming Munroe as Marion County’s Most Preferred Hospital by consumers. Purves served on the Florida Hospital Association (FHA) Board and was Chairman of the Advocacy Committee, serves as a member of the American Hospital Associations Regional Policy Board and was appointed by the Florida Speaker of the House to the Florida Medicaid Low Income Pool Council. He was awarded the FHA spirit of advocacy award and the American Hospital Association grassroots advocacy award for his effort working with the legislature. Locally he served on the boards of the Marion County Children’s Alliance, Marion County Public Policy Institute and was chairman of the Ocala/Marion County Economic Development Corporation. During his leadership at Munroe Regional, over $151 million in quantifiable benefits were provided to the community (at cost).Before joining Munroe, Purves was President/CEO of the Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals in Columbia, South Carolina. The 322-bed not-for-profit organization consists of two acute care hospitals, the Providence Heart Institute and the Providence Orthopedics and NeuroSpine Institute.Prior to that, Purves was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for New Hanover Regional Medical Center, a 700 bed public academic medical center in Wilmington, North Carolina from April 1996 until July 1998. Purves also served as Interim President/CEO of New Hanover Regional Medical Center from May 1997 – October 1997.From 1987 until 1996 he was employed by Carilion Health System in Roanoke, Virginia where served as COO of Roanoke Memorial Hospitals, the systems 725 bed flagship teaching hospitalPurves is a native of Roanoke, Virginia. He and his wife, Mary Anne, have two grown children.
