Biography

Dr. Jennie Ricketts-Duncan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Reading and Literacy Studies. She joined the Reading Faculty in the Adrian Dominican School of Education in 2011 with more than 30 years of combined international and US K-12 teaching experience in all areas and levels of literacy, reading, and language arts education. She earned her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Barry University, an Education Specialist degree in Reading from Barry University, a Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership from Central Connecticut State University, and a Bachelor in Education from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica. Prior to joining the Barry University School of Education faculty, Dr. Ricketts-Duncan was instrumental in coordinating the Western Regional Caribbean Center of Excellence (CCETT) in Literacy Education for Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College, in Jamaica. CCETT provides reading assessment and intervention to increase the literacy performance of all first through third grade struggling readers across the island. While in Jamaica she was a reading and literacy studies lecturer who taught at the undergraduate level and assisted with curriculum development and assessments for teacher accreditation. Since then, Dr. Ricketts-Duncan teaches undergraduate and graduate reading courses in the Department of Reading and Literacy Studies at Barry University. She has provided professional consultation as a grant reviewer for the Louisiana’s Department of Education, Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy (SRCL) Grants, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and served as a subject matter expert for the Florida Department of Education. She was the 2014 recipient of Barry University Dr. Cecile Roussell’s PhD Fellowship for her reading research project, Children’s Literature Mobile Library (CLBM). Dr. Ricketts-Duncan’s research includes: teacher leadership and practice in reading, professional development, literacy coaching practice, interdisciplinary approach to literacy, and integrating literature across the curriculum. She has presented at several local, national, and international conferences. Dr. Ricketts-Duncan volunteers her service on university committees and other community partnerships. She is currently the Co-President of the Phi Delta Kappa International Organization Barry University Chapter and a member of the Florida Reading Association Board. She also serves as Reviewer for the Reading Horizon Journal, Literacy Research Association, Journal of Research in Education, and Current Issues in Education Journal. She has maintained active memberships in local, state, and international reading organizations namely: International Literacy Association (ILA), Phi Delta Kappa International Organization (PDK), American Educational Research Association (AERA), Eastern, Educational Research Association (EERA), National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), Florida Association of Teacher Educators (FATE), Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers (ALER), Literacy Research Association (LRA), American Reading Forum (ARF), Florida Reading Association (FRA), Secondary Reading Council of Florida (SRCFL), and Dade Reading Council (DRC).
