Gretchen E. Schwarz

Biography

Gretchen Schwarz, Ph.D., is Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Baylor. She taught English (high school and college) and German (high school) in the public schools of Texas and is a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she spent her first seven years of teaching. She received her B.A in English from Baylor, M.A. in Humanities from UT Arlington, and Ph.D. in secondary education from the University of North Texas. She worked for over 18 years at Oklahoma State University in English Education in Stillwater and in Curriculum Studies in the Tulsa branch. Among other activities, she helped found the Oklahoma State Writing Project, after being a participant in the New Mexico State Writing Project. She has worked with a number of national professional organizations and was president of the American Association for Teaching and Curriculum. Dr. Schwarz’s research interests include teacher lore and teacher research, media literacy, graphic novels, and diverse curriculum issues. Among various articles and book chapters, she co-wrote and co-edited Teacher Lore and Professional Development for School Reform (1998, Bergin & Garvey) and Media Literacy: Transforming Curriculum and Teaching, a yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education (2005, Blackwell). She continues to believe that American education will only thrive as do its teachers.
