Biography

 Mr. Meleveetil Damodaran, B.A. (Economics Hons), LLB, is an Advisor and Chief Representative in India for the ING Bank of Netherlands. Mr. Damodaran is the founder of Excellence Enablers, an initiative that addresses coaching and mentoring needs of corporate India and focuses on improvement of Board performance. Mr. Damodaran is an Independent Consultant and Corporate Advisor, Coach and Mentor and sits on the Boards of several reputed companies. He served as Consultant of Aureos Capital Limited. He has over 30 years of experience in financial services and public sector enterprises. He was a Senior Adviser of Aureos India Fund II. He serves as the Chairman of Glocal Healthcare Systems, a recent pioneering pan-India effort to provide quality healthcare at affordable costs to Indians in the underserved rural areas. His areas of expertise include Financial Management, Securities Markets, Corporate Governance, Public Administration and Leadership. A member of the premier Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Manipur- Tripura cadre, since 1971, Mr. Damodaran has held a number of important positions in both the Central and State Governments and in India's Financial Sector, before demitting office as Chairman, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in 2008. After a career spanning several regulatory and developmental assignments in the state of Tripura, he was appointed as its Chief Secretary in 1992, the youngest ever in the country to hold such a position in the State Government. Thereafter, Mr. Damodaran worked as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Banking Division, for five years, dealing with Government's ownership functions of Public Sector Banks and being its interface with Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In 2001, he was appointed the Chairman of Unit Trust of India (UTI) to rescue India's largest and oldest investment institution which had collapsed. His restoring of UTI to health and strength is widely acknowledged as the most successful turnaround story in India's Financial Sector. He was simultaneously given charge of Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI), another of India's major financial institutions, which too was restructured by him in an innovative manner, pulling it back from the brink, transforming it to a bank and merging it with another commercial bank. He has been Chairman of ING Vysya Bank Limited since January 14, 2015. He serves as Chairman of Glocal Healthcare Systems Private Limited. He served as Chairman of IDBI Bank Limited. He served as Chairman of UTI Asset Management Company (P) Ltd. and serves as its Director. He has been an Independent & Non­Executive Director of Biocon Limited since April 26, 2016. He has been an Independent Non Executive Director of CRISIL Limited since January 14, 2014. He has been Non-Executive Director of Larsen & Toubro Limited since October 22, 2012. He has been Non-Executive & Independent Director of Hero MotoCorp Limited since June 16, 2008. He has been a Director of ING Vysya Bank Limited since July 21, 2008. He serves as a Non-Executive Director of Bennett Coleman & Co. Limited. He serves as an Independent Director of Tech Mahindra Limited. He served as a Non-Executive Director of L&T Infrastructure Finance Co. Ltd. until July 24,2014. He served as a Director of IL&FS Securities Services Ltd., COCHIN Shipyard Ltd. and Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited. He served as a Director of S. Kumars Nationwide Ltd. from March 28, 2011 to October 8, 2012 and Satyam Computer Services Limited until March 31, 2012. Mr. Damodaran served as an Additional Independent Director at UltraTech Cement Limited from April 16, 2012 to June 20, 2014. He served as a Director of Sobha Limited since January 29, 2010 until September 12, 2016. He served as a Director of Hindalco Industries Ltd. from April 16, 2012 to January 21, 2014. He served as an Additional Director of Triveni Turbine Limited from April 10, 2013 to September 11, 2013. He is the Chairman of Ministry of Corporate Affairs Committee for Reforming the Regulatory Environment for doing Business in India. He has been appointed by the Government of India as the first Chairman of the Society and Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Tiruchirappalli. Mr. Damodaran is widely acknowledged as one of India's foremost champion of Corporate Governance and has won several awards for Leadership, Governance, Transformation and Public Service. He was elected Chairman IOSCO and has won several awards for Leadership, Governance and Public Service. Research Interest

 Biocon's major areas of research now include cancer, diabetes, and other auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Because of the high percentage of people in India who chew betel or tobacco, India accounts for eighty-six per cent of oral cancer in the world, known locally as "cancer cheek". Diabetes is prevalent, and people who do not wear shoes are at risk to have a minor scrape or injury develop into gangrene, or "diabetes foot".Biocon is also working on drugs to treat psoriasis, a skin pigment disease which can result in social ostracization.
