Biography
Mr. Alex Matschiner is the Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder at BioFactura, Inc. Mr. Matschiner brings with him over 12 years of experience in R&D, manufacturing, and facility design. He previously served as Senior Manager, Manufacturing Operations on the construction of Human Genome Science’s $180 million commercial manufacturing facility. The facility is slated for completion in 2005 and will house twin 20,000-liter bioreactors, among the largest in the biopharmaceutical industry. Mr. Matschiner was responsible for overseeing the design and construction of all downstream manufacturing areas. Prior to this project he served in similar lead positions during the construction of both of Human Genome Science’s microbial and mammalian pilot production facilities. During those projects Mr. Matschiner was part of the project team from the conceptual design phase through construction to the final start-up and validation of the facilities. After the completion of the facilities, he managed the Recovery and Purification manufacturing groups. Prior to his work in manufacturing and engineering, Mr. Matschiner worked in the R&D group at Human Genome Sciences. During that time he developed the manufacturing process of one of Human Genome Science’s lead product candidates. Before joining Human Genome Sciences in 1995, Mr. Matschiner worked at the Center of Marine Biotechnology where he investigated the enzymology of hyperthermophiles. He received his Master of Science degree in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from the University of Iowa.
