Biography
He is a professor of Pathology and Genetics. He is a member of Bio-X, Child Health Research Institute, Stanford Cancer Institute.He is a member of Scientific Staff of Carnegie Institution of Washington (1989 - 2003)and Staff Associate of Carnegie Institution of Washington (1986 - 1989).He is interested in mechanisms by which cells and organisms respond to genetic change. He studied a variety of natural mechanisms that are utilized by cells adapting to genetic change. These include mechanisms activated during normal development and systems for detecting and responding to foreign or unwanted genetic activity. At the root of these studies are questions of how a cell can distinguish "self" versus "nonself" and "wanted" versus "unwanted" gene expression.
