Biography
Bachelor of Biological Sciences from the Institute of Biosciences of USP in 1978, Ph.D. from Cornell University Medical College, New York, USA, specializing in receiving the best thesis award of 1984; has also postdoctoral fellow in Dr. AR MacLeod, Ludwig Inst. Cancer Res., Medical Research Council Center, Cambridge, England, 1986; and a Master's degree in Histology and Embryology, by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of São Paulo in 1980. His academic background is also highlighted by his postgraduate studies in Dept. Cell Biology and Anatomy, University of New York , Downstate Medical Center , and Dept. Cell Biology and Anatomy, Cornell University Medical College. He was a Lecturer at the Institute of Chemistry at USP, as Full Professor in the Department of Histology and Embryology at USP and at the Department of Biochemistry, also at USP. He also worked at the Biotechnology Research Fellow, by the Rockefeller Foundation, USA, from 1990 to 1997; and Howard Hughes Medical Research Institute from 1997 to 2001. Other highlights in his career include serving as a Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in 1998 as Secretary of Scientific Development of the Ministry of Science and Technology in 1999, President of CTNBio - Technical Commission on Biosafety in 1999 and the award as Commander of the National Order of Scientific Merit in 2002. During his executive career, he was Executive Director of Votorantim Novos Negócios from 2001 to 2010 and since 2011 is Partner and Executive Director of the Pitanga Fund, a venture capital company. He is a member of the Board of Directors of TIVIT and AMYRIS; at CTC - Canavieira Technology Center S / A has been an independent member of the Board of Directors since March 2015.
