Biography

Daniel C. Carter, PhD Co-founded New Century Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in 1997 and serves as its Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Carter was employed by NASA for a period of 11 years in positions of increasing responsibility including Chief of the Biophysics and Advanced Materials Branch. He founded the Laboratory for Structural Biology at Marshall Space Flight Center; and, most importantly, he was the Principal Investigator of a structural biology group that discovered and refined the structure of human serum albumin and its principal domains. Dr. Carter has been the Principal Investigator on more than 15 microgravity experiment payloads carried out on board the Space Shuttle, Mir, and the International Space Station. Dr. Carter also served NASA in a Senior Executive Service (SST) appointment as the Senior Scientist for Biophysics at the Marshall Space Flight Center. During his tenure at NASA, Dr. Carter was awarded the prestigious NASA Inventor of the Year Awards in 1990 and 1991 and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1997. He has authored more than 70 scientific publications and has 30 patents and patents pending. Dr. Carter earned a PhD in Crystallography focusing in macromolecular structure determination from the University of Pittsburgh, an MS in Organic Chemistry focusing in pharmaceutical derivations from marine natural products from the University of Hawaii, and a BS in Chemistry and BA in Psychology from the University of Oklahoma.
