Biography
Pierre de Villiers, MD, is a Staff Anesthesiologist in the Anesthesiology Institute's Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia at Cleveland Clinic. He is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in anesthesiology and by the National Board of Echocardiography in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography. He is also a Fellow of the Faculty of Anesthesiologists of South Africa. Dr. de Villiers?s specialty interests focus on cardiothoracic anesthesia. A native of South Africa, Dr. de Villiers received his medical degree from the University of Stellenbosch Faculty of Medicine, followed by a simultaneous four-year residency in anesthesiology at the University of Stellenbosch and the College of Medicine of South Africa. He did an internship in internal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology and a residency in anesthesiology at Tygerberg Hospital in South Africa, where he later served as a Consulting Anesthesiologist. Following his clinical training, he received a fellowship from the Cleveland Clinic for advanced clinical training in cardiothoracic anesthesia and transesophageal echocardiography. While a fellow in training, Dr. de Villiers received the Carol L. Ferguson Resident of the Year Award for Clinical Excellence from Cleveland Clinic. Prior to his appointment to Cleveland Clinic in 1997 as a Staff Anesthesiologist in the Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Dr. de Villiers spent time as a Consultant in Cardiac Anesthesia at the King Fahad National Guard Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He also served as Senior Specialist and Head of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia (pediatric and adult) at the University of Natal in Durban, South Africa, and was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Ore.
