Biography

 Vladimir Vekstein, MD, is a staff physician in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute.  He practices at Hillcrest Medical Building and Hillcrest Hospital, where he is Director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory. He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology. Dr. Vekstein was appointed to the Hillcrest medical staff in 2000. Prior to that, he was director of the Coronary Care Unit at University Hospitals of Cleveland and Director of the Coronary Care Unit at The Mt. Sinai Medical Center from 1990 to 1997. He also was an assistant professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine for 10 years, 1990 to 2000. Dr. Vekstein earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine, New York, NY. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Mass. During his cardiology fellowship he simultaneously completed a subspecialty fellowship in percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. After completing his postdoctoral training, Dr. Vekstein was an attending physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He held this position until relocating to Cleveland in 1990. Dr. Vekstein is the author of a number of papers, abstracts and reviews in leading cardiac journals, including Circulation, the New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He has been a co-investigator on six studies related to heart attack and unstable angina and a co-principal investigator on a study of medications to treat acute heart attack. In 2008, 2009 and 2010 Dr. Vekstein was named to the Best Physicians in Northeast Ohio list.
