Biography

" Stephanie Hinnershitz is an assistant professor of 20th-Century U.S. History with specialization in immigration and Asian American history. Her first book, Race, Religion, and Civil Rights: Asian Students on the West Coast, 1900-1968, was published by Rutgers University Press in 2015 and focused on the contribution of students from China, Japan, and the Philippines to civil rights activism on the West Coast during the early twentieth century. Her second book, A Different Shade of Justice: Asian American Civil Rights in the South, will be published by UNC Press in late 2017. A Different Shade of Justice uncovers the history of Asian Americans' legal battles for civil and human rights in the South from the late nineteenth century through the early 2000s. Dr. Hinnershitz is currently working on her third book project, Built with the Tears of Many: Forced Labor and Japanese American and Japanese Canadian Incarceration during World War II, a study of the unwarranted imprisonment of Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians and the transnational system of forced labor that resulted between 1942 and 1949. Hinnershitz's work has also appeared in The Journal of Social History, The Journal of Southern History, Immigrants and Minorities, and the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography. In 2015, Hinnershitz also published an online module with Bedford/St. Martin's on the Immigration Act of 1965. Hinnershitz has received support from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Social Science Research Council, the Library of Congress, and the Baker-Nord Center for Humanities (Case Western Reserve University) for her research."
