Stephen F Duffy
Professor
Civil And Environmental Engineering
Cleveland State University
United States of America
Biography
"Steve has 35+ years experience as a practicing civil engineer. His primary fields of civil engineering practice are geotechnical engineering, site engineering, and various types of structural engineering design. With regards to Steve's credentials as a scholar, he is the editor of one book, and the author/co-author of nine book chapters. He has been the primary author or co-author of twenty-two peer reviewed journal articles the latest one published in January of this year. He is the primary author of four industry standards: one ISO standard and three ASTM standards. Currently he is active in the ASME Pressure Vessel and Piping committees serving as a member of the nuclear code committee on graphite core components. He has been active in ASTM, ASCE (Fellow, and past president of the Cleveland Section, and a former officer of a national committee on transportation security), and the American Ceramics Society. He has twenty-one successfully funded research grants during his tenure at CSU. Since starting at CSU, his research efforts in the field of engineering mechanics as it relates to the design of components fabricated from brittle materials (e.g., ceramics, glass, and graphite) has led to $1,196,229 in grants. He has an international reputation in the field of designing components fabricated from ceramic materials. Steve has put together a short course on designing ceramic components. He was asked to participate as a consultant to the Cleveland Clinic on a multi-million dollar NIH grant. This multi-agency research team is endeavoring to develop the world's first artificial kidney through the utilization of nano-porous ceramic filters - the design of which will prove critical to the success of this effort. His efforts in the field of transportation engineering field has generated $1,585,658 in federal dollars for the University Transportation Center which had to be matched dollar for dollar with local cost share."
