Biography

As an environmental and occupational epidemiologist, Dr. Leah Schinasi conducts population-based research and uses quantitative methods to characterize associations between exposures experienced in the environment and the workplace with human health effects. Dr. Schinasi received her MSPH and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health. As a PhD student, she worked on a community based and participatory research study investigating the community health effects of exposures to air pollutants and odors near industrial hog production facilities. For her dissertation, she conducted a hospital-based case control study to investigate associations between medical, environmental and occupational exposures and nasal carriage of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. After completing her PhD, Dr. Schinasi was a postdoctoral research fellow at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France. Here, she worked on a study investigating associations between occupational agricultural exposures and lympho-hematopoietic cancer risk. After leaving IARC, Dr. Schinasi joined the Environmental and Occupational Health Department within the Dornsife School of Public Health as a postdoctoral researcher, where she worked on projects focused on the carcinogenic health effects of pesticide exposure, the chronic health implications of occupational sedentary behavior, and the relationship between urban greening, urban microclimates, extreme heat events, and human health.
