Susan Emmett

Biography

 Susan D. Emmett, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Global Health at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Emmett's research focuses on reducing disparities in global hearing health. Working with collaborators around the world, Dr. Emmett studies the social, economic and health effects of hearing loss and evaluates pathways for prevention. Her preventive research has centered on the role of early childhood undernutrition in hearing loss in Nepal. She is expanding diagnostic capabilities in remote communities through a collaboration with the Norton Sound Health Corporation in Alaska, where she recently launched a community randomized trial to improve school hearing screening using mHealth technology and telemedicine.   Dr. Emmett is committed to expanding access to cochlear implants, a treatment for severe to profound hearing loss that is often limited to high-resource settings. Leading a team across 14 countries, she has demonstrated that cochlear implantation can be a cost-effective treatment option in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. She is expanding this work to other regions of the world.
