Biography
Dr. Lawrence S. Barak, M.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Cell Biology at the Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Barak is the lead inventor, developer and patent holder of its fluorescent-based assay technology. Additionally, he holds two patents on a fluorescent probe widely used in cell biology. He serves as a Scientific Founder at Xsira Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He served as its first president and was a member of the Board of Directors. He has remained associated with it in his capacity as a scientific consultant. He have considerable and continuing involvement in the development and optimization of fluorescent-based assays and electro/optical instrumentation that are critical to duke's progress. he possesses a diverse background that includes a Ph.D. in physics from Cornell University where he was involved under Dr. Watt Webb in the development of novel fluorescent methods for the detection of membrane receptors and components of the cell cytoskeleton. He also possesses an M.D. from the University of Michigan, is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics, and has completed postdoctoral training in cell/molecular biology at Duke University Medical Center with Dr. Marc Caron.
