Seong S. Shim

Biography

Dr. Shim is a board-certified psychiatrist and neuroscientist. Dr. Shim received an MD degree in the Chung-Ang University Medical College. He received a PhD degree in psychopharmacology from Southern Illinois University, Department of Pharmacology. He completed residency and psychopharmacology fellowship, Department of Psychiatry at Yale University. He joined the psychiatry faculty at Case Western Reserve University in 2000 and moved to the Chicago Medical School in 2012. Since 2014, He has been providing psychiatric service at the Atlanta VA Medical Center and teaching and conducting research at the VA medical center and Emory. Dr. Shim studied the dysfunction of dopamine system related to schizophrenia in the laboratory of Benjamin S. Bunney, MD, as a psychopharmacology fellow at Yale. He also studied synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus in the laboratory of Timothy Tyler, PhD, at Department of Neurobiology, Northeast Ohio Medical University. His research has been centered on neuroplasticity and synaptic plasticity for major mental illness. His research has been funded by NIMH, the VA Merit Review, foundations and pharmaceutical companies. His recent research interest has been understanding the mechanistic relationship between traumatic brain injury and subsequent Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. His current research focuses on glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) inhibitors including lithium as a novel therapeutic strategy for traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer’s disease. He has published a number of research articles and several book chapters. He has been on the editorial board of research journals and has been on the scientific program committees of international conferences.
