Biography
Mary serves as GS&P’s State Transportation Leader for North Carolina, working from our Charlotte office. She leads business development and design for projects including infrastructure, planning and land development, offering a deep understanding of the direction of the region’s growth. As a Charlotte native and long-time leader in North Carolina’s transportation industry, Mary offers experience at the state and local levels in intergovernmental relations, community involvement, plan development, neighborhood/corporate relations and legislative liaison. She has been responsible for market research and analysis, product and service development, and strategic plan development and implementation. Outside of the office, Mary is actively involved with numerous organizations such as the North Carolina Public Transportation Association, Women Executives, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce’s President’s Circle and Board of Advisors and Economic Development Council, as well as the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS), for which she previously served as president. In 2017, Mary was recognized for her long-standing commitment to the Charlotte chapter of WTS with the establishment of the Mary N. Clayton Honorary Scholarship, which will be awarded to young women who plan to pursue careers in the transportation industry. Additionally, Mary founded Women of Power, a local organization supporting female business and community leaders. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Geography from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Arts degree in Urban Geography from the University of North Carolina.
