Biography
Through each phase of his life, Brooks Smith has taken away important lessons. He owned fitness clubs and learned about motivation and management. He sold yachts and learned about customer service and networking. He consulted in telecommunications and learned about technology and marketing. He confronted the Internal Revenue Service, fought city hall, packed his life into his car and moved. And moved again. Then, he founded InComm in his Atlanta garage, where he put his life experience to work. Today, InComm is a leader of technology innovation, generating more than $400 million in annual net revenues and processing more than $9 billion in retail sales transactions. A pioneer of point-of-sale technology, in July InComm acquired a patent 10 years in the making. The System and Method for Authorizing Stored Value Card Transactions, patent 7,578,439, is the culmination of InComm’s POS innovation that began with Smith’s efforts in the mid-1990s. The patent protects a computer-implemented method for activation, deactivation and redemption of prepaid cards via POS terminals for all types of cards. The system also ensures accurate processing and authorization of all prepaid POS transaction types by utilizing unique identification numbers that may be printed and magnetically encoded on the card.
