Biography

Dr. John N. Williams serves as the Dean of the Indiana University School of Dentistry a position he has held since June 2010. Prior to this time, he served as dean at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry (2005-2010) and the University of Louisville School of Dentistry (1999-2005). Dr. Williams previously served as Associate Dean for Educational Programs at Louisville for over seven years. Dr. Williams served concurrently in the Office of the Provost, University of Louisville (1988-91) as an Assistant University Provost. He is a 1974 graduate of Transylvania University (Lexington, KY) and a graduate of the University Of Louisville School of Dentistry (1980). Prior to entering dental school, he served as a Legislative Analyst (1974-76) for the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission. Upon graduation from dental school, he entered private general dental practice and served part-time positions at the Louisville Memorial Primary Care Center (FQHC) and at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women. He completed his MBA degree in 1987. In 1986, he joined the Department of Community Dentistry at the University of Louisville. He served as co-principal investigator of the 1987 statewide oral health survey. This first statewide study served as the basis for important oral health policy decisions including workforce planning and public outreach programs for Kentucky.
