Gary S. Guthart Ph.d.

Biography

Dr. Gary S. Guthart, Ph.D., has been the President of Intuitive Surgical, Inc. since July 12, 2007 and also has been its Chief Executive Officer since January 01, 2010. Dr. Guthart served as the Chief Operating Officer at Intuitive Surgical, Inc. from February 09, 2006 to December 31, 2009 and also served as its Executive Vice President until July 12, 2007 and Senior Vice President of Product Operations until February 09, 2006. He joined Intuitive Surgical, Inc. in April 1996 and served as the Vice President of Engineering in November 1999. He was part of the core team developing foundation technology for computer enhanced-surgery at SRI International (formally Stanford Research Institute). While at SRI, he also developed technologies for vibration and acoustic control of large-scale systems. He has been a Director of Illumina, Inc. since December 1, 2017, Affymetrix Inc since May 2009 and Intuitive Surgical, Inc. since April 22, 2009. Upon receiving his Doctorate Degree from the California Institute of Technology, he was honored with the Richard Bruce Chapman Memorial Award. In addition, Dr. Guthart received a B.S. in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated magna cum laude and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Science from the California Institute of Technology.
