Biography

Dr. Joel I. Brenner is an associate professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Brenner, the Helen B. Taussig Professor and a member of the Baltimore medical community for 34 years, joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 1999. He is a board-certified pediatric cardiologist who serves as the director of Pediatric Cardiology and as director of the Helen B. Taussig Congenital Heart Center at Johns Hopkins. He also leads the pediatric cardiology program at Baltimore’s Herman & Walter Samuelson Children's Hospital at Sinai. His special interests include community-based specialty care delivery, fetal cardiology, and the epidemiology of congenital heart disease. Dr. Brenner earned his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed a pediatrics residency at New York Hospital and a pediatric cardiology fellowship at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Prior to joining the Johns Hopkins faculty, he served as the Director of Pediatric Cardiology and President of the Medical Staff at the University of Maryland Hospital. The author or co-author of over 60 peer-reviewed scientific articles, Dr. Brenner has been listed seven times among Baltimore’s top doctors. He was awarded the Presidential Recognition Award in 1991. The Maryland affiliate of the American Heart Association awarded him the Helen B. Taussig Award in 1996. He also served as President of the affiliate.
