Biography

Dr. Mark L. Barr obtained his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and completed 10 years of postgraduate residency at New York University and Columbia University, including a 2-year NIH-sponsored research fellowship in transplantation immunology. Dr. Barr is former President and current Chair of the Scientific Grants and Awards Committee of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) and is the Immediate Past Chair of the Thoracic Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS). He has served on the Board of Directors of both the ASTS and the American Society of Transplantation, and as the Program Chair for the Annual Scientific Meeting of Both the ISHLT and the American Transplant Congress. Dr. Barr actively serves on multiple governmental transplant-related oversight subcommittees under the auspices of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), including the Scientific Technical Advisory Committee of the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. He is the incoming Chair of the Thoracic Committee for the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS). Dr. Barr has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in the fields of cardiothoracic surgery and heart and lung transplantation. He is a Deputy Editor of the American Journal of Transplantation. In addition, Dr. Barr is a standing reviewer for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Lancet, and Transplantation. He maintains an active research program, funded by both federal and regional grant support, studying transplant immunology and Pulmonary physiology. He has served as a study section member for the NIAID, NHLBI, and NCRR of the National Institutes of Health.
