Biography
Dr. Nadarajah Vasanthan is an associate professor of chemistry at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus. Dr. Vasanthan teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in general, physical and polymer chemistry. He received a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1993 from the City University of New York, an M.A in chemistry in 1990 from City College of New York and a B.Sc. (Hon) in chemistry in 1986 from the University of Jaffna in Sri Lanka. Dr. Vasanthan completed his post-doctoral training at North Carolina State University (1993-1995) with Professor Alan Tonelli in the area of fiber and polymer science. He worked as senior scientist at AlliedSignal and TRI/Princeton from 1995 until 2004 when he joined the faculty of the Chemistry Department at the Brooklyn Campus, where he currently serves as professor. Dr. Vasanthan specializes in physical chemistry of polymers, polymer physics and spectroscopy of polymers. The primary research activities in his group focus on (1) structure development of polymer films and fibers; (2) formation and characterization of polymer nanocomposites; (3) inclusion compounds; and (4) effect of microstructure on degradation of biodegradable polymers. A member of several professional organizations including the American Chemical Society, Fiber Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he has published more than 50 papers in a variety of polymer journals.
