Biography
Michael Leitner is a Full Professor of Geography in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, USA, an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Experimental Statistics at LSU, and an Adjunct Faculty in the Center for Geoinformatics at the University of Salzburg, Austria. He served as the chair of the Cartography Specialty Group, Association of American Geographers (AAG) from 2004-07 and is the past editor (2008-2014) and current associate editor (since 2014) of the Cartography and Geographic Information Science Journal (http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/tcag). He received a Fulbright Scholarship for graduate studies at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, USA (1990-92) and together with four other colleagues received the 2007 Meredith F. Burrill Award from the AAG. He was a guest professor at the University of Vienna (2008) and at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences in Villach, Austria (2009) and a lecturer at the Universities of Salzburg, Graz, and Klagenfurt (all Austria), and at the SUNY at Buffalo, USA.
Research Interest
Dr. Leitner is currently completing a book on the impact of hurricanes on crime and two edited books on “Crowdsourced Mapping” and on “Geospatial Predictive Modeling”. Further ongoing research discusses the spatiotemporal prediction of criminal events, geospatial privacy issues in geospatial technology, and various aspects of the association between lithium in drinking water and suicide mortality.
