My main research interest is multiscale interface engineering of ultrafine-scaled materials (material by design). The ultrafine-scaled material exhibits superior mechanical and irradiation properties dominated by the atomic scale defect evolution at interfaces. Therefore, my approach to the problem starts from atomic scale: where the interfaces’ dislocation structure and its response to various external conditions are captured using atomistic modeling tools and/or direct HRTEM experimental observations. Such finding is then analyzed using the theory of dislocations and crystal plasticity, and incorporated into higher length scale plasticity models. I also have interest in the emerging area of additive manufacturing (AM). I am currently utilizing multiscale modelling to address several issues known to AM, including fatigue performance improvement as well as porosity elimination
