Biography
Dr. Thanawastien is the Associate Research Director at Matrivax. She is an immunologist with over 15 years of research experience in vaccine development. She earned her Ph.D. studying vaccine immunology in the laboratory of Dr. John Clements at Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Her Ph.D. research focused on the design of novel vaccine strategies and adjuvants against HIV antigens to optimize specific humoral and cell-mediated immune responses in both systemic and mucosal compartments. As a post-doctoral fellow in the department of Microbiology and Immunology at Tulane University Health Sciences Center, she had additional training in protein biochemistry working on candidate anthrax vaccine. Later, Ann moved to Boston for a post-doctoral position with Dr. John Mekalanos in the department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School. In the Mekalanos lab, Ann gained additional training in the areas of bacterial genetics and pathogenesis, and in innate immunity, particularly in relation to vaccine development. Dr. Thanawastien initiated Protein Capsular Matrix Vaccine (PCMV) research with Dr. Mekalanos during her post-doctoral fellowship. She joined Matrivax R&D to continue to develop the technology.
