Biography
Joe draws on an extensive background in the oil and gas industry to help clients maximize the value of assets and investments. An expert in upstream operations, Joe often helps petroleum executives face the unique challenges and opportunities of pursuing unconventional extraction techniques and technologies, an undertaking where improving efficiency and reducing costs can be especially critical. He also has strong expertise in establishing effective deepwater strategies and supply chains. In his advisory work, Joe guides clients toward high-impact opportunities by designing more effective organizations, setting growth strategies, performing supply chain diagnostics, and leading operational benchmarking efforts. His recent work includes: Developing an unconventional organization design for an international oil company seeking to effectively integrate three major onshore acquisitions Designing and executing a benchmark of drilling and completion costs for unconventional developments Creating a growth strategy for an operator of drilling support vessels Conducting a competitive analysis of bidding in offshore lease sales Analyzing the market and strategic options for procuring critical deepwater project components, including floating production storage and offloading, ultra-deepwater rigs, and subsea systems for a major deepwater operator Offering sustained support to the CEO of $4 billion enterprise, focused on the specialty chemicals and plastics business unit; advised on three major transactions and helped to restructure four businesses Surveying the renewable energy landscape in electric vehicles, photovoltaic, and concentrated solar power, including analyzing market growth and technology positioning on behalf of a performance materials supplier Before joining McKinsey, Joe was an independent consultant and provided expert testimony in civil litigation pertaining to the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Before that, Joe managed the North American chemicals and petroleum practice at Charles River Associates and was a partner in the energy and chemicals practice of Booz & Company, where he co-led the Houston office. Before entering consulting, Joe worked in reservoir engineering and planning for Exxon. Joe also served for five years as the chairman of the finance committee for the Houston Symphony Orchestra.
