Beth Wells

Biography

Beth graduated from Stirling University in 1987 with a BSc in Biological Science and SAC in 1989 with a GI Biol. in Animal Production Science, following which she worked in the field of veterinary diagnostic services. Beth joined Moredun in 2009 and obtained a PhD in 2012 for research on “Development of an improved diagnostic test for sheep scab based on biomarkers”. After 6 months working in the Communications team, she worked as a post-doctoral research scientist on an EU funded project “Aquavalens” to improve detection methods for the protozoan parasites Cryptosporidium and Toxoplasma in water. Furthering her interest in Knowledge Exchange, Beth’s current role within Moredun is a dual one retaining projects in the Protozoology group along with working as part of the Communications team as a Knowledge Exchange Specialist, focussing on the livestock industries. Central to this role is to develop key relationships with stakeholder groups, organisations and policy makers to help increase the impact of our research outputs and establish effective networks and collaborations with other organisations to encourage inter-disciplinary approaches. A main interest is to develop and implement innovative approaches to KE, including collaborative projects such as the Biosecurity initiative and the introduction of on-farm events to the Moredun Roadshow programme. Interests also include wider land management issues and Beth is currently undertaking a fellowship to establish improved connections between the Scottish Government’s Main Research Providers and Land Managers in the Cairngorms National Park.
