Dr George Newlands

Biography

George Newlands has a HNC in Medical Laboratory Sciences and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and was made a Fellow of the Institute of Medical laboartory Sciences in 1987. George has an interest in developing vaccines to protect against gastrointestinal nematode infections in ruminants. His studies helped to determine that detergent-solubilised antigens from the guts of the gastrointestinal nematodes Haemonchus contortus and Ostertagia ostertagi are highly protective against homologous infection. He has been involved in detailed studies of the native antigens which has allowed the recombinant expression of all of the major components of the protective H-gal-GP complex from H. contortus and their subsequent vaccination trials. This has been followed by a series of experiments using phage display technology to identify the antigenic epitopes responsible for protection. The phage display work shows considerable promise as a means to produce synthetic vaccines.
