James R. Baker

Biography

 Dr. James R. Baker, Jr. is NanoBio Corporation’s scientific founder.  In 1998, Dr. Baker was appointed director of the newly established Center for Biologic Nanotechnology at the University of Michigan.  Two years later, NanoBio was formed and spun-out from the Center based on research led by Dr. Baker.  In 2005, the University Board of Regents formed the Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences and appointed Dr. Baker as its first director.  Dr. Baker’s subsequent accolades include the Distinguished University Innovator Award from the U-M Office of the Vice President for Research. Dr. Baker is currently CEO and chief medical officer of FARE, the national Food Allergy Research & Education organization that works on behalf of the 15 million Americans living with food allergies.  For 20 years, Dr. Baker was the chief of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the University of Michigan, where he helped start the Food Allergy Research Center.  He has also served as the Ruth Dow Doan Professor of Biologic Nanotechnology since 2003 and he retains his professorship and serves in an emeritus capacity at the University.  In his role at the University, Dr. Baker continues to actively collaborate with NanoBio on several nanotechnology-based development programs. Dr. Baker has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed scientific articles and has more than 30 years of experience in basic biologic research, concentrating in immunology and host defense both at the University of Michigan and in industry at Merck, where he served as a senior vice president and the global head of vaccines.  His long-standing research in immunology involves the basis of several autoimmune diseases, and he has become an internationally recognized expert in nanotechnology, nanomolecular materials in biomedical applications and the emerging field of nanomedicine
