Biography
Dr. Cowen received his B.S. in biology and society from Cornell University and his M.D. from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He then went on to receive specialty training in dermatology and serve as chief resident at the University of Rochester. Dr. Cowen completed a clinical research fellowship in the Dermatology Branch and the Master's program in clinical research from Duke University before joining the Senior Staff in 2004. Since 2009, Dr. Cowen has served as Head of the Dermatology Consultation Service. Dr. Cowen is an internationally recognized expert in the diagnosis and management of cutaneous graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). He conducted an independent clinical trial of imatinib mesylate for the treatment of the sclerotic form of GVHD (ScGVHD), and was the first to identify total body irradiation as a risk factor for ScGVHD.
